How long do I have to use my Post-9/11 GI Bill (chapter 33) benefits?

Generally, you have 15 years from your last release from active duty (of at least 90 days) to use chapter 33 benefits.

If you are currently on active duty, the last date you can use the benefit will generally be 15 years from the date you are released from active duty.
You may be eligible for 100% of tuition and fees charged (minus any amount paid under tuition assistance).
You may be eligible for chapter 33. Please answer the next question to determine the amount of chapter 33 benefits you may be eligible to receive.

After you submit your application, we will send you a letter telling you what benefits you may be able to use.
You may be eligible for 100% of the benefits payable under the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Individuals eligible for 100% of the benefits payable may also be eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program. Click here for more information on the Yellow Ribbon Program.
You may be eligible for 90% of the benefits payable under the Post-9/11 GI Bill
You may be eligible for 80% of the benefits payable under the Post-9/11 GI Bill

You must have at least 90 days of active duty service to be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill
If you have used chapter 30 and would like to use the Post-9/11 GI Bill (chapter 33) instead, you have to give up chapter 30. Once we process your application, you cannot reverse this decision. If you give up chapter 30, you will only receive what you have remaining under chapter 30 as your chapter 33 entitlement.

For example, if you have 15 months of chapter 30 entitlement remaining when you elect chapter 33, you will receive 15 months of chapter 33 benefits.
You may be eligible for up to 36 months of chapter 33 benefits. However, you cannot receive more than a total of 48 months under VA benefit programs.
If you have used the chapter 1606 and would like to use the Post-9/11 GI Bill (chapter 33) instead, you have to give up chapter 1606. Once we process your application, you cannot reverse this decision.
You may be eligible for up to 36 months of chapter 33 benefits. However, you cannot receive more than a total of 48 months under VA benefit programs.
If you have used the chapter 1607 and would like to use the Post-9/11 GI Bill (chapter 33) instead, you have to give up chapter 1607. Once we process your application, you cannot reverse this decision.
You may be eligible for up to 36 months of chapter 33 benefits. However, you cannot receive more than a total of 48 months under VA benefit programs.
If you want to use the Post-9/11 GI Bill, you will have to give up one of the benefits you are eligible for. You only have to give up one of the benefits and you will remain eligible for the benefit that you do not give up. Review the website for each benefit you are eligible for and decide which benefit you should give up. Remember, you cannot change your mind after we have processed your application.
